KING, MERVYN

Sir Mervyn King steps down as Governor of the Bank of England on June 30th, 2013. He studied in Cambridge (King's College) and Harvard. He joined the Bank of England in 1991 as Chief Economist, coming form the Academia (LSE). He has introduced inflation targeting in the British monetary policy, following the American approach. He succeedded to keep under control inflation, to sustain growth and to avoid crashes, except for Northern Rock in 2008.

From "2002 to 2007 banks' balance sheets tripled in size, fuelling the house price booms" (The Economist, June 15th 20123, p.28). The Subprime crisis has been the most difficult part of his job to manage, while oil price boosted British exports.
